Experience of An Exco Member
Grace Wong
Prior to my involvement in True Hearts Connection Mentoring & Befriender Scheme, I
have not heard of the mentoring concept nor its effectiveness. However, my past one year
involvement has convinced me of the growing potential of this concept. I have recognised
that one of the most effective ways to cope with the ever rising crime and social
problems, especially among youngsters, is through mentoring. Mentors, as role models, set
the example for their Mentees, coaching and guiding them towards the desired path.

I was very excited as I joined the pioneer team of executive committee members. I
anticipated that there would be challenges ahead but I took on my role as a Liaison
Director anyhow. I have always enjoyed working with youth. There is so much potential in
them. I want to be a big sister to them, sharing with them their lives. I was nervous at
my first encounter with them and soon realised that working with them was all about
tolerance, encouragement and being understanding. It has indeed enriched my life and
sharpened my communication skills.

No doubt, I had my share of struggle as I see less of my personal free time but my
desire to help the less privileged in our society had urged me to press on. Having to
juggle with limited time among my family, friends and work, I have also learnt to manage
my time wisely and maximise my effectiveness. Of course, all these would not have been
possible if without Gods strength and the continuous encouragement from my fellow
volunteers. |
Being the Liaison Director, I hope to extend this scheme to more institutions as I have
heard how both our mentors and mentees have benefited tremendously through this scheme,
during their sharing in our recent launch.
Many think that voluntary service is simply about giving. You see, until you are
involved, you would not have realised it is about receiving too. |
