About Us (True Hearts)
True
Hearts Connection Mentoring & Befriender Scheme (the Scheme)
is held in partnership with the BP Mentoring Program.
It
is not just another organisation but a social movement. Its spirit
is fired by the belief that young people could and should be Warm,
Open, Dynamic and Caring. Through mentoring, training and exposure,
the Scheme provides an avenue for their potential to be realised
and their worth to be affirmed. This helps them to find a purpose
and direction in life. With these young people, it aims to reach
out and serve the less privileged of the society.
This
Scheme aims to pair school pupils (mentees) with student volunteers
(mentors) and is developed to address the needs of mentees with
positive role models and to increase their awareness of what further
and higher education can offer them.
Mentors
play the role of befrienders who aim to make friends with mentees
possessing below-average academic results. These mentees are mainly
from families with an income of less than $2,000 and need proper
guidance.
Through
building of friendship, sharing of life, and listening to problems
encountered, befrienders hope to provide guidance and inspirations
to the mentees and help mould them into people of value to the society.
In
1997, we started the Scheme with Victoria Junior College as the
pioneer college and Temasek Secondary School, as the first mentee
school. In 1998, we see growth as Tampines Junior College joined
the scheme with more than thirty mentors. We were able to reach
out and serve more mentee schools such as Bedok West Primary School,
Springfield Secondary School and Ngee Ann Secondary School.
This
Scheme is officially recognised by the National Youth Council as
well as National Youth Achievement Awards Board and is supported
by BP Singapore.
